Feng Shui Tips – Flowers As Feng Shui Enhancements

There are many enhancements you can make to your home to promote positive energy and bring balance and harmony to your life. One of my favourite enhancements is to use fresh flowers and our home in France is often filled with vases of fresh flowers in most rooms of the house.

Flowers are excellent to place in your home as enhancements as they help to revitalise the flow of chi around your space. Fresh flowers are always best, but if you cannot get hold of fresh flowers, or the smell of flowers has a negative impact on your health and comfort, artificial flowers especially silk can be substituted. Opinion is divided as to whether dried flower arrangements can enhance the energy in your home and I have to say that I fall on the side of the fence which does not recommend them. To me dried flowers remind me too much of death and decay and so I avoid them in the home. This for me is a personal choice, if you love dried flowers and if for you they symbolise eternity then placed with intention and love they can act as an enhancement to your personal space.

When placing flowers in your home there are a few guidelines that you can follow to help support and balance the flow of chi. I have covered the main ones below. Whichever of these you choose to follow, always remember for maximum benefit to place the flowers with intention, keep them well watered changing the water every day, discard any dead leaves as soon as you see them and replace the flowers as soon as they have died.

Guidelines for placing flowers in your home

Consider the shape of the flower.

Flowers with heads and leaves that are soft and rounded help energy to flow naturally and calmly around the home, and are beneficial to have in place if you want to maintain the balance and harmony of your interior space. Flowers with spiky heads and leaves such as lilies, gerbera and gladioli are excellent to place in dark or neglected areas of the home as they help to stimulate stagnant chi and get energy moving again.

Match the colour of the flower to the bagua area of your home.

There are a couple of things to bear in mind when choosing flowers based on their colours. The first is that ideally the colours should be representative of the bagua area that they are going to be placed in so beautiful blue irises and hyacinths can be placed in the knowledge area, bamboo and ferns in the family area, red tulips and poppies for the wealth area and so on. The second rule with colour is that ideally you should only use one or two colours in a display if you are wanting to promote positive chi. A riot of colour in a vase, though visually stunning, can add a jarring note to the home and make the energy move in sharp sporadic jerks which can lead to conflict and disharmony.

There are a couple of exceptions to this. If you want to raise your self esteem or profile you can place a dramatic colourful display of flowers in the fame area of your home which will help strengthen the energy in this area of your life. In the same way if you have a particular area of your home where the energy is stale and stagnant, and most importantly this area is in a yang area of your home, then again a bright colourful display of flowers can help to reenergise this space.

Represent the seasons in your home

The energy in your home corresponds closely with the seasons and should be perfectly balanced. Yin energy is cool and dark like autumn and winter, metal and water. Yang energy is warm and bright like spring and summer, wood and fire. To help maintain the balance of yin and yang in your home it is beneficial to place flowers in their corresponding areas. In spring ensure that your family and wealth areas are filled with spring flowers such as hyacinths, irises, daffodils and tulips. In summer fill your wealth and fame and self esteem areas with lilies, dahlias and sunflowers. Autumn is a time to place chrysanthemums and asters in the metal areas of your home and in winter your career area will benefit greatly from the placement of plenty of evergreen plants and the wonderfully winter blooming camellia.

The scent of a flower is more powerful than the sight of the flower

The sweeter and stronger the scent of the flower the greater this benefits and promotes strong and healthy chi. Strong scented flowers that are great enhancements for your home are flowers such as lavender which is great to position in the health area of your home and sweet peas, roses and freesias.

Don’t forget that flowers can be symbols

Some flowers have such strong symbolism that it is impossible to ignore these when placing them in your home. To strengthen or find love place pink roses, orchids or peonies in the relationship area or your bedroom. If placing roses it is important that any thorns are removed from the stems. To attract wealth and abundance place 8 red tulips in your wealth area as the cup shape of the tulip symbolises the cup of wealth and to help promote career prospects place narcissus in the career area of your home or your home office.
